    You have left! (?) (thinking…)
How important is this to you?

I second this and to take it a step further, it would be awesome to have multiple badge colors and shapes to choose from specific to each account just like notification sounds can be specified per account or to use the general one. Look at the Apple Mail plugin Dockstar for how this can be implemented. The badges appear on the Dock icon AND in the menubar as separate icons but only when unread mail exists in a specified folder.

Like the OP, I have some less important accounts that I still want to keep tabs on at a glance

With Rockstar for Mail.app, seeing a yellow start in the menu bar with a count of 10 on it means I need to catch up on my article subscriptions at some point whereas seeing the red circle with a count of 10 on it means I've got clients with issues or something else more important.

Furthermore, with Rockstar when you click on the badge icon in the menu bar (supports up to 5) you are taken directly to the associated mailbox in the Mail.app.
