    The sync feature in Preferences > Advanced > Sync contacts works fine, but it would be preferable if this happened automagically and not just when I do it manually or entirely restart Airmail.

    Create the group in Contacts.app, make sure your Contacts are synced with Airmail (Preferences > Advanced > Sync contacts) and type in the name of the group after "To:" in the Compose window.
